To get the best from your tulips, follow these easy guidelines

Buy firm, plump bulbs.

Plant tulips in the fall, once temperatures are consistently below 13°C in any well-drained soil.

Plant pointy side up, three times deeper than the height of the bulb.

First year bulbs don't require any fertilizer; in subsequent years, feed them in the spring by gently working organic fertilizer, compost, well-rotted cow manure or a slow-release bulb food into the soil. Never use bonemeal; it adds little nutritional value and may attract animals that dig them up.

In the spring, snip off the dead blossoms. Allow foliage to brown and die back naturally. Do not bunch, tie or braid the leaves.
