• Buy firm, plump bulbs.
• Plant tulips in the fall, once temperatures are consistently below 13°C in any well-drained soil.
• Plant pointy side up, three times deeper than the height of the bulb.
• First year bulbs don't require any fertilizer; in subsequent years, feed them in the spring by gently working organic fertilizer, compost, well-rotted cow manure or a slow-release bulb food into the soil. Never use bonemeal; it adds little nutritional value and may attract animals that dig them up.
• In the spring, snip off the dead blossoms. Allow foliage to brown and die back naturally. Do not bunch, tie or braid the leaves.
