With a little imagination, you can create high style at a down-to-earth price. A trip to Ikea yielded a pretty Phalaenopsis orchid ($16.99) and a handsome metal-lined water hyacinth-leaf container ($8.99). I cut down the rim of the orchid’s plastic pot, rested it on a few stones (for drainage) in the container and replaced the orchid’s dowdy stick support with a graceful branch. The finishing touches are moss, pebbles and a small cast-iron bird from my collection.
